Maryland Spaatzen Awarded Bronze Medal of Valor

In recognition of his quick reaction to the life-threatening aftermath of a boating accident on the Potomac River, Rich Benet, #1031, was awarded Civil Air Patrol’s Bronze Medal of Valor. Presented in a recent ceremony by Maryland Wing commander Colonel Ralph Vogt, the medal—CAP’s second-highest decoration for bravery—honors Benet for rescuing two fishermen whose boat had capsized. Faced with impending darkness and runoff from heavy rains, Benet determined that there wasn’t time to find additional help and carried out the rescue himself. Retired Air Force Brigadier General Jim Jaeger, Spaatz #80, was on hand for the award ceremony and spoke to the audience, commenting that Rich’s bravery exemplifies the dedication of CAP members. 7 May 99
