Spaatz Trek: The Next Generation

Move over, Captain Kirk. In July, Cadet Steven R. Gullberg II, of Missouri Wing’s Spirit of St. Louis Composite Squadron, became the first second-generation Spaatz Award recipient in Civil Air Patrol history. C/Col Gullberg’s father, USAFR Lt Col Steve Gullberg, #439, earned the Spaatz Award in 1977 while a member of the Eagle Composite Squadron in Jamestown, New York.

Steve the second–now proud holder of Spaatz Award #1465–is a high school senior, plays varsity football, and serves as his squadron’s cadet commander. He has soloed both powered aircraft and gliders and plans to attend college in an aviation program. His goal is to become an airline pilot. Steve the first–holder of the other Spaatz Award in the family–is a captain for American Airlines and also serves as Reserve Forces Director for CAP-USAF’s North Central Liaison Region.
