Association Leadership Update

To Our Members, Benefactors and Friends,

A little over one month ago, I received a phone call from Steve Austen telling me me that he needed to step down as our Association’s President.  While disappointed at the loss of such a great leader, I understood his reasoning and agreed with his need to focus full-time on both work and family.  We wish him the best of luck as he departs the Board of Directors, and I hope that he will return to active service with the Association at some point in the future.

With Steve’s departure, I assumed the position of National President per our current Bylaws, and I embarked upon a search for a new leader to fill my former position as Vice President.

It is my pleasure to announce that Lt Col J.D. Ellis (Spaatz # 661) has accepted the call to service, and will serve as your Vice President until the 2013 election season.  J.D. has performed superbly both as a member of our Board of Directors, and as the Program Director for our annual Mid-Winter Dinner.  I’m sure his enthusiasm for both the Civil Air Patrol and our program will benefit the organization in the months ahead.

The move of J.D. into the Vice President role vacates his Board seat, which will be filled with Matt Heffron (Spaatz #1450), our current Alternate Director.  To replace Matt, I’ve appointed Alan Dickinson (Spaatz #524). Alan is returning to the board as Alternate Director, a position he held earlier in 2012.

I have big shoes to fill, but we have a great leadership team ready and able to take our Association into the future. I look forward to working with the Board, and serving you, our members, as we continue to build The Spaatz Association into the premier benevolent organization both supporting the Civil Air Patrol cadet program, and developing the leaders of tomorrow.

Ted F. Bowlds, #290
National President
